Initial Workshop April 7-8 2005, Žabljak

Goal of the project is twofold:
a) Establish the model of public-private partnership, which will result in the improvement of level of services within actual sustainable tourism offer that is based on natural attractions of the park;
b) Analysis of barriers for development of private sector in area of sustainable tourism in Central and Northern Montenegro, and providing recommendations for overcoming of these barriers.

Project’s strategic goal is to prepare the stakeholders for wider intervention in the field of Protected Area Management from aspect of sustainable tourism and development of public-private partnership models, which would be applicable even in areas of rural development and production of healthy food.

The workshop initiated process of establishment of public-private partnership within sustainable tourism. Practical aspects of the sustainable tourism concept were presented to workshop participants: representatives of National Park, ministries, local governments, private sector, NGOs, and donors’ community, in order to present the very project in details and to reach consensus on its implementation.

Workshop was organized in premises of Žabljak Municipality on April 7th and 8th. Workshop was facilitated by Kamelia Georgieva, international expert in the field of sustainable tourism in national parks, and she was assisted by 3 local facilitators.

- Within the project ‘Unleashing Sustainable Tourism Entrepreneurship in the area of Durmitor National Park’ public company, National Parks of Montenegro and National Park Durmitor have presented Book of regulations on internal order within national parks.
- Target groups were rafters and mountain climbers
- Rafters and mountain climbers had an opportunity to give their recommendations and suggestions to officials from National Parks of Montenegro and National Park Durmitor, in order to improve the quality of rafting and mountain climbing services and to offer better services to domestic and foreign visitors.
- Action Plan, of the project ‘Unleashing Sustainable Tourism Entrepreneurship in National Park Durmitor’, was also presented at the workshop, as well as defining the next steps in its implementation.

Training of guides for two hiking trails in National Park Durmitor

Training lasted 3 days, May 23rd –25th 2005, and afterward the guides’ knowledge and skills were tested.Training was conducted on two hiking trails within National Park Durmitor, which are covered by this project: circle trail spreading alongside Blake Lake and the trail going to the Snake Lake. Certificates, for guides who successfully passed the training for two hiking tours within National Park Durmitor, were awarded on June 6th within premises of National Park Durmitor.

This is the first phase of activities within the project, which are related to training of guides and hiking trails. In the second phase, the consultant will provide training to the guides in interpretation skills, and he/she will also help in designing interpretation tables and leaflets for products of ‘hiking tourism’ on two trails in National Pak Durmitor.

Study tour for project stakeholders to Bulgaria

A Study tour to Bulgaria is proposed is an appropriate tool to share concrete experience in the field of public private partnerships for sustainable tourism and destination management in the regions of National parks. The group will include representatives of the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Tourism, National Park Enterprise, Durmitor National Park , Rafters group, hiking guides association, NGO Most and UNDP. The Study tour is planned for 6 days. Preliminary orientation will be delivered to participants in order to be prepared. After the study tour the participants will prepare reports and will deliver presentation to their stakeholders group in December of this year.
